Thailand: Sports, Exercise & Nutritional Sciences Program

This two-week program is based in Thailand and is intended for undergraduate college students ages 18 and up who are studying kinesiology, sports management, athletic training, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, nutrition, physical education, and fitness and health promotion, and other related fields. This program is ideal for students looking for a short-term study abroad experience that introduces basic concepts of sports, exercise, and nutritional sciences within a global public health context.

Why: More than ever, the Sports Science field is in need of well-rounded professionals who have a thorough understanding of their respective fields and the ability to work collaboratively across cultures. Sports, Exercise, & Nutrition is designed for undergraduate students who want to gain a broad interdisciplinary perspective of sports, exercise, and nutrition through a global public health lens.

We created this program specifically to help participants not only build awareness of the various careers and workplace options, but also gain hands-on experience that’s hard to duplicate in the classroom. Focusing specifically on the body, wellness, fitness, mindfulness, sports management, rehabilitation and traditional healing –students will learn from public health, fitness experts and sports managers in formal and informal settings, and will gain a behind-the-scenes look into why Thailand is leading the way in global public health and how sports and exercise science contributes to this body of knowledge.

How: If it is to bring continued health benefits, physical activity needs to be embedded in the daily lives of many more people. Sports, exercise, and nutritional science is one of the most undervalued interventions to improve public health. Its benefits are great. Physical activity is closely associated with better health and reduced mortality, including reduced mortality from coronary heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, and reduced fatality after a heart attack. It is within this context that sports and exercise science + nutrition provides opportunities for working with people—to make them stronger, faster, more efficient, better able to deal with stress, and less susceptible to injury.

Program Details

Starting at Chiang Mai University Department of Sports and Rehabilitation Sciences and public health, students will participate in an exchange-based workshop focused around a topic of mutual interest. Topics might include: Sports Management, Rehabilitation Sciences in Practice, Thai Traditional Healing Methods, or Wellness and Exercise Science in a Cultural-Comparative Perspective.

Participants can expect plenty of practical exchanges in a variety of settings, develop a broad range of skills as well as gain insight into applying to graduate schools and career opportunities from our staff. Many aspects of the program will be inherently spontaneous or “fluid” and based on the individual skills, background and interests of participants, creating what we believe to be the best type of deep learning experience.

Observation and Volunteer Hours

Get ahead: We design all of our programs with our participants in mind. If you are interested in becoming a Sports & Exercise Science or Nutrition professional, plenty of observation is essential, but a first-hand experience and inside look into these fields with an understanding of public health will set you apart from your peers. Understanding how public health and sports and exercise science are related will help you to not only become a better-rounded student but also a more empathetic and compassionate person

Itinerary

Most Therapy Abroad participants choose to fly on one of our organized group flights which depart from Los Angeles or San Francisco, California, joined by at least one Therapy Abroad staff member who will help you through international check-in and departure process. On arrival day, all participants will be greeted by Therapy Abroad staff at Chiang Mai International Airport in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and from there you will be driven by private vans to your accommodation. The program is divided into several different parts that are designed to help you get to know a variety of locations throughout Northern Thailand including local universities, public clinics, fitness centers, sports management institutions and private practices. Scattered through the program are several, fun cultural activities that we think you will really enjoy.

On a daily basis, participants will learn in small group discussion-style settings, practice new skills and try new techniques, observe and learn how to shadow professionals and learn from public health professionals.

Evenings and weekends will be set aside to explore all that northern Thailand has to offer. Enjoy the city of Chiang Mai and the countryside of Northern Thailand, visit local markets, try new foods and ride in Thailand’s infamous Tuk Tuks through the windy streets of Chiang Mai’s Old City. You’ll enjoy a variety of weekend activities like hiking, rock climbing, Thai cooking classes, Thai Boxing Class, and a visit to an elephant sanctuary.

Where Am I Going?

Nicknamed the “Jewel” of the Caribbean, Belize is a unique Central American country nestled between Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. Belize was previously known as British Honduras before gaining its independence from Great Britain in 1981. Labeled a developing country, Belize is working hard to bring much needed services to its special needs population. Because of Belize’s history with Great Britain, the official language of the country is English. However, there are about eight different prevalent languages spoken throughout the country. Each language comes with its own bit of history and culture. Throughout your time in Belize you’ll have the opportunity to see and learn about the varying cultures and how they all blend together to create the unique experience that is Belize

See Ireland like a local! Learn More About Each other. Grow Your Network of Globally-Minded & Growth-Oriented Colleagues. Travel With A Purpose.

Per ASHA (2020), developing cultural competence is a dynamic and complex process requiring ongoing self-assessment and continuous expansion of one’s cultural knowledge. It evolves over time, beginning with an understanding of one’s own culture, continuing through interactions with individuals from various cultures, and extending through one’s own lifelong learning. Cultural competence is increasingly important to eliminate long-standing disparities in the health status of people based on racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds

Cultural humility goes beyond cultural competence. It is a dynamic and lifelong process focusing on self-reflection and personal critique, acknowledging one’s own biases. This program seeks to help professionals grow through an immersive, relevant, and impactful experience.

Coursework is designed to bridge theory and practice, providing evidence-based practical tools that you can immediately put to use in your practice as a speech-language pathologist while broadening your cultural perspectives and experiences.

Our workshops are packed with video case studies, discussion points, and opportunities for active learning. Below is an outline of the courses. Part of the day will be spent in the classroom focusing on coursework in cultural and linguistic diversity. The rest of the day we will apply information from our coursework with culturally relevant and enriching activities, including the work with our community partners, local schools, and non-profit organizations while learning about local culture, religion, and customs.

A Note To Graduate Students & Clinical Directors

We know that for many graduate students with classes and clinics, travel during the summer can be a challenge. We currently only offer this 5-day program one time per year. Why do we do this if we know the timing is bad?

Because for working professional SLPs, the timing is perfect. The goal of this program is to get a really diverse group of people together to learn from each other in a culturally rich and diverse place. Everyone will get CEUs including those needed for the new ASHA DEI Certification and a certificate of cultural & linguistics diversity from Bilinguisitcs. For graduate students, we want this event to be the highlight of your journey to becoming an SLP and a truly unique learning environment for everyone involved. This only works if we have a really good combination of professionals and graduate students-together and learning from each other. In addition to learning this content, It’s also an amazing way for graduate students to build their professional network, gain mentors in the field, and even find potential CF placements. I know it is a challenge because of the summer clinic and class schedule, but we would love to work with you to make this trip possible. The content, professional experience, and networking go above and beyond anything that is currently offered for graduate students at a typical conference. We hope you will consider making this a part of your graduate school experience.

It's Time to Travel Again. It's Time to Learn More About Each other. It's Time To Grow Your Network of Globally-Minded & Growth-Oriented Colleagues

Webinar What? Zoom Who? Wouldn’t you rather earn up to 30 hours of CE in a single week, Academic credit or gain hands-on clinical experience?

Attendees will receive a Certificate in Cultural and Linguistic Diversity that covers the information you need to confidently diagnose and treat diverse populations and provides all the CEUs you need for up to a 3-year earning period. Enjoy all that the country has to offer -food, culture, and amazing activities. Here is a snapshot of what we will be doing.

Each morning of this program, attendees will be immersed in an interactive discussion series (see topics below) and each afternoon, there are activities planned for everyone.

Graduate students and professionals will have the added option of foregoing some of the afternoon CE hours for clinical work at our on-site clinic, in local villages, and at local schools.

Each day is customizable. So, if a student needs all 20 clinical hours they can choose to work each afternoon, but they could also opt for doing just 8, 12, or 16 hours in clinic and join some of the other activities depending on what they want to do and/or what your university requires.

A Note To Graduate Students & Clinical Directors

We know that for many graduate students with classes and clinics, travel during the summer can be a challenge. We currently only offer this 7-day program one time per year.

In addition to learning this content & getting clinical hours, It’s also an amazing way for graduate students to build their professional network, gain mentors in the field, and even find potential CF placements. I know it is a challenge because of the summer clinic and class schedule, but we would love to work with you to make this trip possible. The content, professional experience, and networking go above and beyond anything that is currently offered for graduate students at a typical conference. We hope you will consider making this a part of your graduate school experience.

University Faculty-Led Programs

Therapy Abroad works with universities around the world to build custom international programs. Programs will be built from the ground up and will be driven by your goal, values, and learning outcomes. Our programs are designed for students to gain observation and clinical hours and foster creativity, team building, international exchange, cultural awareness, service, and professional competencies. From flights, insurance, transportation and logistics on the back end, to safety and risk management, curriculum, and leadership on the front end, our goal is to set you up for success. We work with diverse university partners including small liberal arts colleges and community colleges as well as large state universities, private universties, and HBCUs.

Leadership + Capacity Building: This is your most valued asset. Our goal is to make sure that faculty and students feel prepared to be part of a global partnership that contributes to learning on all sides. We will cover best practices in facilitation, safety and risk management, cross-cultural communication and learning methodologies and will set you and your team up for success. We work within the frameworks set forth by professional organizations in the USA such as The American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) and American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and design our programs with rigor and evidenced based practice. This is a fluid, collaborative and open-sourced process and we are committed to helping you feel prepared for your time abroad. We will work directly with your study abroad office or global affairs office to facilitate every aspect of your program.

Safety + Risk Management: With over two decades of experience managing international travel programs on four continents, we have you covered when it comes to safety and risk management. From our research and vetting process during the initial consultation to training and capacity building to our dedication to local emergency response procedures, safety is our number one priority. Our goal is to allow you to focus your attention on your program goals, outcomes, and facilitating an outstanding study abroad and cross-cultural experience for your students.

Educational Programming: We will analyze what learning and service opportunities are available and we will spotlight them in a way that will resonate. These learning opportunities might range from cultural and social in nature, to direct hands-on service-learning requiring expertise in specific areas of speech-language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and applied behavior analysis. Our goal is always to create programs that fit the learning outcomes of the university program and elevate the student learning experience. Next, we will work directly with your faculty and team to collectively determine the methodology that is most appropriate for your program. Lastly, we’ll help you develop tools that can deepen and sustain the learning through projects and experiential practices that have a lasting impact on all involved.
